Inihayag ng pulisya sa Vancouver, Canada na siyam na ang kumpirmadong nasawi nang araruhin ng isang sasakyan ang mga taong dumadalo sa isang Filipino street festival nitong Sabado.
"As of now, we can confirm nine people have died after a man drove through a crowd at last night’s Lapu Lapu Festival. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident," saad ng Vancouver Police sa post sa X, ayon sa ulat ng Agence France-Presse.
"A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured," dagdag nito. "The driver is in custody."
Naganap ang insidente habang ginugunita ng Filipino community ang selebrasyon ng Lapu Lapu Day, ayon sa post sa X ni Vancouver mayor Ken Sim.
Nangyari ang insidente nitong weekend, bago ang halalan sa Canada sa Lunes.
"Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time," sabi pa ni Sim.
Ayon sa pulisya, nangyari ang insidente dakong 8:00 pm ng Sabado (0300 GMT Linggo) malapit sa East 41st Avenue at Fraser Street.
"A lone suspect, subject male with one vehicle, drove through a crowded community event occurring near here. That male was taken into custody at the scene by the crowd. It was a Filipino community event,” ayon kay Vancouver Police interim chief Steve Rai sa ulat ni Mav Gonzales sa GMA News “24 Oras Weekend" nitong Linggo.
“It would be unfair for me to speculate on exact numbers, as the victims were taken to multiple hospitals in the region,” dagdag nito.
Sa mga larawan ng Canadian broadcaster CBC, makikita ang emergency crews na abala sa pagtulong sa mga biktimang nakahandusay sa kalsada.
Sinabi ng festival security guard na si Jen Idaba-Castaneto sa isang local news site na Vancouver Is Awesome na "bodies everywhere" makaraan ang pananagasa.
"You don't know who to help, here or there. It's so shocking," saad niya.
Inihayag naman sa post sa X ni British Columbia Premier David Eby na "he was shocked & heartbroken" sa nangyari.
Sa ulat ng Reuters, sinabi ng isang saksi na may 15 tao siyang nakitang nakahandusay makaraang managasa ng mga tao ang isang itim na SUV.
Tinangka umano ng driver ng SUV na tumakas pero hinabol siya ng mga tao at nasukol hanggang sa dumating ang mga pulis.
"Our thoughts are with the victims and their families -- and Vancouver's Filipino community," Jagmeet Singh, leader of the left-wing New Democratic Party said on X.
Samantala, nakiramay naman si Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. sa pamilya ng mga biktima.
Sa kanyang pahayag, sinabi ni Marcos na kasalukuyang nakikipag-ugnayan ang Philippine Consulate General sa Vancouver sa mga awtoridad ng Canada upang matiyak ang masusing imbestigasyon sa insidente, na naganap na trahediya.
Nakikipag-ugnayan din umano ang konsulado sa mga biktima at pamilya para kailangang tulong.
“I am completely shattered to hear about the terrible incident during a Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, BC, Canada,” ani Marcos.
“On behalf of the Philippine Government and the Filipino people, Liza and I would like to express our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and to the strong and thriving Filipino community in Canada,” dagdag niya.
